Behind the Work of Staff Senate: Staff Voice and Governance
Below is the email sent out via a Staff Senate Email to our colleagues on October 28, 2026. ---------
One of the most common questions I hear from staff is, “What does Staff Senate actually do?”
Most people are familiar with our monthly Senate meetings. What many may not realize is that those meetings are only a visible portion of our work. Much of what Staff Senate accomplishes begins behind the scenes through the effort of our 15 committees.
Each committee contributes in a different way, but all share a common goal: serving staff across the University of Kentucky. Through this Behind the Work of Staff Senate series, we will introduce these committees and explore their work in five areas:
- Staff Voice & Governance
- Professional Growth & Engagement
- Advocacy & Communication
- Stewardship & Operations
- The Work Behind the Senate
After highlighting our committees, the series will conclude with a look at the leadership and coordination that help bring their work together.
This month, we begin with Staff Voice & Governance and four committees whose work helps elevate staff perspectives, strengthen shared governance and connect employees with university leadership:
- President Advisory Committee
- Healthcare Administration Advisory Committee
- Higher Education Administration Advisory Committee
- Shared Governance Collaboration Committee
Although these committees serve different areas of the university, each helps ensure staff experience, concerns and ideas remain part of important conversations. Their work reflects one of Staff Senate’s most important responsibilities: helping staff voices be heard.
As members of the university community, we all serve in different capacities. Staff, faculty, administrators and student employees each contribute to the success of the university through their unique roles and responsibilities. Effective governance depends upon communication, collaboration and ensuring that all voices have an opportunity to be heard.
President Advisory Committee
One of the most direct ways Staff Senate represents staff is through the President Advisory Committee.
This committee serves as a connection between Staff Senate and the Office of the President, providing feedback on issues brought forward by university leadership while also elevating matters Staff Senate believes deserve attention. Through thoughtful dialogue and collaboration, committee members help ensure staff perspectives are included in conversations affecting the university community.
Shared governance is most effective when staff have opportunities to share their experiences, insights and concerns.
Healthcare Administration Advisory Committee
The University of Kentucky HealthCare enterprise is supported by thousands of dedicated staff who serve patients, families, students and the Commonwealth each day.
The Healthcare Administration Advisory Committee provides a forum for staff concerns to be communicated directly to healthcare leadership while strengthening communication between staff and administration. By identifying opportunities for improvement and sharing feedback, the committee helps ensure staff experience remains part of discussions affecting the health care work environment.
Health care staff face unique opportunities and challenges, and this committee plays an important role in helping communicate those experiences and concerns.
Higher Education Administration Advisory Committee
Much like its health care counterpart, the Higher Education Administration Advisory Committee focuses on supporting staff working throughout the university's academic and administrative enterprise.
The committee works to improve workplace effectiveness while providing a pathway for staff concerns and ideas to reach leadership. By encouraging dialogue and collaboration, members help strengthen the staff experience and support the university's teaching, research, and service missions.
As the university continues to evolve, the insights and experiences of staff remain valuable in identifying opportunities to improve processes and strengthen organizational effectiveness.
Shared Governance Collaboration Committee
At UK, meaningful progress often happens when staff, faculty, students, and administration work together.
The Shared Governance Collaboration Committee partners with Faculty Senate and Student Government Association leaders to strengthen the university's shared governance framework. Through these partnerships, the committee promotes communication, collaboration and understanding among the groups that represent major constituencies across campus.
The work of this committee reflects an important principle: some of the best solutions emerge when individuals with different experiences and perspectives come together around a common purpose. When staff, faculty and students all have an opportunity to contribute, the university benefits from a broader and more informed conversation.
Why This Work Matters
The committees highlighted this month may focus on different areas, but they share a common purpose: ensuring that staff have a voice.
Behind every committee meeting, recommendation and conversation with leadership are dedicated staff senators and committee members working to ensure staff perspectives are heard. Their efforts help strengthen communication, collaboration and engagement while creating opportunities for staff to participate in the governance process.
Staff Senate's work extends beyond monthly meetings. It is the result of staff members who volunteer their time, share their expertise and advocate for their colleagues. Whether helping connect staff with leadership, improving communication, or fostering collaboration across campus, these committees play an important role in ensuring that staff voices remain part of the conversation.
This article marks the beginning of our Work of Staff Senate series. Over the coming months, I look forward to highlighting additional committees and sharing the many ways Staff Senate works behind the scenes to advocate for staff, support engagement and strengthen our university community.
As you can see from just these four committees, Staff Senate's work spans a broad range of issues and responsibilities. We have 15 committees working throughout the year on behalf of staff. Each committee contributes in its own way, whether by fostering communication with leadership, strengthening shared governance, addressing workplace concerns, or helping ensure staff perspectives are represented.
The University's success depends on people serving in many different capacities. Although perspectives and priorities may sometimes vary, every role contributes to the broader mission of the institution. When we approach one another with civility, understanding, and mutual respect, we foster a stronger and more connected community.
I want to thank the Staff Senate committee members who volunteer their time to help strengthen shared governance and bring staff perspectives into important university conversations. Your willingness to listen, ask questions and represent your colleagues helps ensure that staff have a voice and an opportunity to be heard.
Thank you for sharing your perspective, listening to others and helping strengthen the university community we all serve.
