Chair’s Corner: From Listening to Action
Dear Colleagues,
In recent articles, we’ve begun highlighting the work of Staff Senate committees and how they help bring staff perspectives into important university conversations. With more committee spotlights to come, these conversations demonstrate how listening can lead to understanding and, ultimately, action.
Together, Staff Senate’s committees touch nearly every area of university life. Their work supports discussions involving employee engagement, professional development, workplace policies, technology, communications, campus operations, staff recognition, benefits and other topics that affect employees across the University of Kentucky. These efforts help ensure staff perspectives are considered as the university advances its mission of education, research, health care and service throughout Kentucky.
Recent conversations across Staff Senate have reinforced themes that matter to employees. Staff want clear communication, access to reliable information and resources, opportunities for professional growth, recognition for their contributions and a better understanding of university initiatives that affect their work.
Many of these conversations begin with employees.
A question raised in one area may reveal a challenge affecting colleagues elsewhere. A successful practice developed by one team may help another. An employee seeking information about a policy, program or process may identify an opportunity to improve communication and understanding.
That is why Staff Senate values employee input.
We encourage employees to share workplace concerns, questions, ideas for improvement, successful practices and stories of employees and teams whose contributions deserve recognition. Your experiences help inform committee discussions and strengthen Staff Senate’s ability to represent employees across the university.
From listening to action:
One simple step we can take now is to talk. As we approach the winter weather season, employees and supervisors should discuss expectations for potential university closings or delays and review HR Policy 71 (View the HR Policy 71 website) together. Having that conversation before winter weather arrives can help provide clarity when decisions need to be made.
Our goal is not simply to identify problems. We want to better understand employee experiences, recognize what is working well, identify opportunities for improvement and help ensure staff perspectives are included in university conversations. Depending on the topic, an issue may be discussed by a committee, explored further through research and discussion or shared with the appropriate university office or leadership group.
Staff Senate does not make administrative policy or determine every outcome. We can, however, listen, ask thoughtful questions, seek reliable information and help connect employee perspectives with the appropriate offices, leaders and decision-making processes.
The effectiveness of Staff Senate depends on more than what happens during committee meetings and monthly Senate sessions. It depends on ongoing conversations with the employees we serve. Every question, idea, concern and success story helps us better understand the university community and the people who make its mission possible.
Listening is where understanding begins. Action becomes possible when employees, senators, university leaders and campus partners work together to seek constructive solutions, strengthen our workplace and advance the mission of the University of Kentucky.
Thank you for staying engaged, sharing your perspective and helping strengthen the staff voice at UK.
